Bereaved Parents Retreat 2017

In September 2017, we co-funded our first bereavement retreat ‘Reflect, Restore, Renew’ with Rosies Rainbow Fund.

Since setting up Teddy’s Wish, we have been passionate about setting up a retreat to give bereaved parents the opportunity to have time away and connect with their lost child. The retreat was run and facilitated by our wonderful patron and founder of Child Bereavement UK, Jenni Thomas and Nikki Whitworth, founder of SLOW (Surviving the loss of your world) at the idyllic St. Katharine’s in Frieth. Together, they worked tirelessly to make sure the weekend was a huge success; it provided parents the opportunity to take part in group therapy sessions, a creative therapy workshop, yoga and mindfulness meditation.

All costs were covered by the two charities as we wanted to make the retreat available to anyone, irrespective of background, or circumstance.

Here is a selection of some anonymous feedback from the weekend:

“Within a short space of time, I felt at ease talking about my pain with people who had moments before been strangers”

“The opportunity to meet other parents in the same situation and to have the time away from everything in a peaceful environment to order my thoughts and get some perspective”

“Meeting other bereaved parents has been an invaluable experience. Making the time to just be where I am and not feeling pressure to get into the ‘functioning me’ ”

“It’s always so beneficial spending time with other people on the ‘inside’ of this. Its Impossible or at least very difficult to understand without having experienced it, and so all other friends and family struggle to ‘get it’ but in this space it’s possible to be, without having to explain or to hide grief away because you don’t feel it would be understood”

“Within a short space of time, I felt at ease talking about my pain with people who had moments before been strangers”

“It was good to realise that you aren’t alone. Sometimes you can think that you are the only ones or have thoughts like “Why us?” You can feel like everyone else’s life is perfect when all you see is your friends posts on Facebook”
