Understanding pregnancy inequalities in Manchester

We know that women and babies from minoritised ethnic backgrounds and those who live in more deprived areas are disproportionally affected by poor pregnancy outcomes. Manchester has a diverse population, but the exact pregnancy outcomes for its population is unknown.  So, our researchers are looking at differences in care and maternal and newborn health in those from different ethnic backgrounds and poorer areas in Manchester.

Research Assistant Yongyi Lu will use electronic patient records from central hospitals in Manchester to understand the local population and their interaction with health services during and after pregnancy. This will help identify those groups facing the greatest health inequalities and complex needs, and how to improve the care they receive.

Crucially, the team will share their methods with other hospitals, ensuring people across the UK can benefit from improved practices and equality of care too.
